Living in this country is terrifying and getting worse by the day. Between mass shootings and a reality TV asshat turned wannabe president…I don’t see things improving. I have always been anti-guns but what I’ve come to realize is that murderers will always find a way, with or without guns. So what’s the solution?
As a child, movies and TV (and I’ll admit it, way too many beauty pageant contestants) tricked me into believing a large majority of Americans wished for world peace. The older I get, the more I realize we are drifting further and further away from ever achieving such a thing. That breaks my heart. We have a presidential candidate fighting for everyone that deserves someone in their corner fighting for them, someone that clearly wants this country to be a better place…yet a large majority of voters side with the candidate that will hurt this country the most. Locally, here in Louisiana, a congressional candidate is basically begging for an all out war to commence. How is this the answer?
No one else deserves to die, no one ever has deserved such a thing. No one should ever die at the hands of another, regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual preference, etc. No one should ever have to live their lives in fear of senseless killings. It is not up to us to decide when someone else’s time is up. Yet here we are.
I am an American who has lost loved ones to guns. I am an American that mourns for the gun related tragedies of strangers every day. I am an American who has been held up at gun point. I am an American who has panic attacks far more often than she would care to admit, due to fears of being randomly killed and leaving a child behind. Too many Americans can relate to these statements. Far too many of us have been touched by gun violence and it’s gone on for far too long.
If you know me, you know that I claim to hate about 95% percent of people on account of them being assholes. So as a person who claims to hate so many, why does it feel like I’m one of the few that would be able to put that aside to make this world a more peaceful place? We need to support and love each other. We need to stop tearing each other apart. We need to think about the consequences of our actions and how they affect others. Hate is NEVER the answer. Killing is NEVER the answer. We must strive for peace for this country, for the world.
